Just because some Catholics commit horrible atrocities doesn't mean all Catholics commit horrible atrocities. Each area that has a church is run by it's own dioceses. The leaders of one dioceses may be wicked, yet the leaders of another diocese (example: North Texas or Western Minnesota) might be virtuous. Overall, all I know is that you can't generalize a entire religion based on individual acts. That would be like basing all your understanding of Japanese people on the horrible war crimes they committed against the Chinese. I mean, the Catholic Church does run the largest charitable organization on the planet.
