Young people can say things like "We'll be best friends forever," which I said many a time. With age, one sees the three D's dispose of friends: difference, distance, and death. The best one can do is replace those that were lost with better ones and try not to wax nostalgic over the past.

Igor,
Yeah looking back on my life the three D's seemed to distance me from my high school friends. I remember saying to my best friend that we would always stay tight until the end. After I graduated we slowly lost contact. I have no clue if he is still alive.

It is easy to look people up via the Internet, if you've of a mind to do so. Distance is a substantial barrier however, as few care to correspond. I've had old friends friend me on Facebook, only to have nothing at all to say via Email, making me wonder why they even bothered.
